What People Ask Us About EVS

questionmark

We are sure that all of you have already read the ¨What is EVS¨ section of our website and are very impressed with the opportunities EVS offers. The intention of our website is to paint you a simple picture of what EVS is and to introduce ways in which you can get more information.

In Synergy Source Serbia we like to talk a lot about EVS, so we didn’t want leave you with only one website section available. Instead we created this article in order to offer more clarity to those of you thinking of becoming international volunteers or interested in introducing EVS to someone else.

With that intention we give you the most frequently asked questions that we receive from our future volunteers. Hope they will be of support to you.

  1. What are the conditions/requirements for becoming an EVS volunteer? Is there a age, language or educational level requirement ?

The main condition is that you are a young person age 18- 30. It might be useful to speak a foreign language, yet it is not obligatory. When it comes to requirements for the level of education – there are none.

  1. What kind of documentation is required for the application procedure?

Well, for international volunteering we would say that having a passport is crucial. It would be supportive to have a nicely written CV and custom made motivational letter in English (if required). Often there is a simple application form that needs to be filled in. That is pretty much it.

  1. What are the volunteer’s expenses and is there an application fee?

EVS doesn’t cost you anything (at least no money). Your sending organization will receive money to prepare you and cover your travel costs. The host organization will take care of your accommodation, food, pocket money and insurance. Also, there is no application fee. Basically, money can’t be your excuse this time.

  1. How long does it take from the moment of applying to getting a volunteer placement?

It is not easy to estimate how long it will take you to get your EVS placement. So the only logical answer is – we don’t know, but we are here to support you in making it fast and short. The process that starts the moment you apply as a volunteer to and is complete the moment you are standing at the airport or train station, has a few stages that depend on 3 parties. You, your sending organization and your potential host. If all 3 work in synergy, you will soon be on your way.

  1. Is there an opportunity to do my EVS with someone (friends, partner…)?

There is indeed an opportunity to apply together and hope that both/or all of you will be accepted at the same place. In practice there are such examples, so if you are more comfortable with sharing this adventure with someone you know, then by all means do so.

  1. Which countries are available for me to volunteer in? Where can I check the offer?

As a volunteer from Serbia you can mainly do your EVS in Programme Countries.

ProgrammeCountries

Each of these countries has NGO’s that are accredited to host you. You can find their offer by following this link: https://europa.eu/youth/evs_database

  1. If I apply for EVS does it mean I have a guaranteed placement? Who decides if I am ¨in¨ or not? What is the criteria ?

Applying means that you are ¨in the process” of becoming an EVS volunteer, and it is very likely that you will be successfully accepted by a host organizations. There is no 100% guarantee label on it, but as the outcome mainly depends on you, we can say that if you really want a place you will find one for sure.

  1. What if I don’t receive an answer from the organization that I wrote to?

Send another one, or let it go and apply elsewhere. It may be supportive not to take rejection or silence from hosting organizations personally. If there is no response, just move on – you will find an organization in due time.

  1. Can my EVS assure me a full time job abroad?

Getting a full time job abroad is not included in your voluntary service program and no one is obligated to hire you after your project is complete. On the other hand there are cases where EVS volunteers stayed in their host organization and obtained a work contract with full or part time work.

  1. Is this a scam? Where is the trick? Will I lose my kidney?

We know that, from where you are standing, this seems too good to be true. A whole year of paid stay abroad and many opportunities to learn, travel and meet new people. In reality EVS includes all of these benefits but also requires your involvement and dedication to your tasks as a volunteer. As a sending organization, we in Synergy Source Serbia are doing our best to support potential volunteers in adjusting their expectations to the available opportunities, but also encouraging them to get the most out of their EVS project. So far we saw people losing many things during their EVS. From a toothbrush, their virginity to the sense of isolation (and a glass eye; ask us about it). Kidneys were rarely lost – and those that were lost, were quickly recovered.

Hope these Q&A were supportive and that you found at least 1 more thing you didn’t know about EVS. If a new question popped up in your mind while reading, please drop us a line.

Cheers,

Synergy Source Serbia

P.S. No kidneys were actually lost during EVS abroad.

Five “Goodies” you get through Self Development

We go through each and every day facing numerous life events that occur one after another. Some are less remarkable than others, but all of them present a chance for personal growth and an opportunity to get closer to the results we say we want to have in our lives.

Every time we succeed in looking at a situation from a different angle, react and respond in a non-customized way, listen instead of speaking or repeating what we already know, the field of our awareness expands and we gain deeper insight into the mechanisms and the thoughts that are shaping our mood, behaviour and outcomes throughout our days.

Investing in developing ourselves is an ongoing inner journey that requires self-love, vulnerability, devotion, curiosity, playfulness and many other virtues that we sometimes forget that we have.

The ones who dare to head off on this expedition to the unknown often discover and obtain various ¨goodies¨ life has to offer when they are open and receptive. From inner peace, acceptance, flexibility, longer periods joy and tranquility to being free from addiction and suffering.

Here are the 5 benefits of self development we as ¨Synergy Source Serbia¨ have discovered through continuous self-work but also from working with many other people we encountered on the path:

  • Increased focus and effectiveness

Once we discover our inner drives and defence mechanism we gain more clarity in why we do what we do. This supports us in ¨letting go¨ of the unnecessary, limiting thoughts and behaviour and supports us to stay focused and dedicated to the goal we want to reach.

  • Finding a purpose in life

Living a life that is in tune with our vision, values and mission can lead us to a very fulfilling state of being. If we are not aware of what is our personal purpose in life, then our actions will be scattered or we could find ourselves being in a gap very often. With self-consciousness comes the insight of personal potential and aspirations that leads to discovery on our purpose in life.

  • Enjoying work, increased productivity

A sense of direction influences the work we choose to do and the way we do it. Once we are more clear on the things we wish to achieve from life, our decision-making efforts become a lot easier. This brings more lightness and playfulness in the work we do and we start to earn money while enjoying it.

  • Overcoming the limiting belief of fixed income

With self development comes the increased feeling of resourcefulness and our intrinsic motivation increases. This means seeing business opportunities where others see a ¨wall¨ and taking initiative and performing actions that no one thought of before.

  • More fulfilling relationships

There are many quotes that refer to self-love being the basis of any other love we can feel and share with others. One of them states ¨Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.¨ and we believe that it is truly as simple as that. Once we feel the love within, we will be able to connect our your family, friends and people around creating deeper and more significant relationship that last.

Volunteers For a Better Generation

volunteersforabettergeneration

We have a new, short-term EVS opportunity available in Gaziantep, Turkey, starting in June. This EVS project is for those volunteers that want to experience and learn how to assist children and teenagers of refugees in their education, social life and learning healthy life habits. The volunteers will join the organization’s daily activities to help children of Syrian and Afghan families suffering from social and economic difficulties. They educate and entertain the kids and teach them basic knowledge, art, mathematics, language, and social/personal skills. They also organize campaigns to reduce xenophobia.

The organization is looking for volunteers between 18 and 30 years old, interest in participating in campaigns and learning activities for children and teenagers with fewer opportunities. The project is in a big Turkish city, Gaziantep, and the organization is located right in the city center, where they host 10-14 volunteers at the same time. All these volunteers are from different countries and cultures, so while you probably have to share a room, you’ll get a unique chance to both meet people from different backgrounds as the opportunity to help children in need.

The deadline for this project is 31/05/15, so be quick.

If you’re interested and you feel that working with and educating children is something you’d enjoy, you can apply directly by sending an email to aliaslanozaslan@gmail.com with the subject “Volunteers for a better generation”. Don’t forget to also attach a CV and a motivational letter, explaining your interest in the project and why you’re the best candidate for the job. If you’d rather have more information before applying directly, feel free to contact us here.

Short-term GroupEVS in the Netherlands

Ommen's old city hall

Our partners at the Olde Vechte Foundation in Ommen, the Netherlands, are organizing a GroupEVS-project for the 8th time. During this project, which lasts from the 29th of June until the 26th of August 2015 they will host up to 30 volunteers from twelve to fifteen different countries.

During the project, the thirty volunteers will be hosted at the Olde Vechte Foundation where they will support local organizations in an active and practical manner, doing volunteer work on daily activities. A few of the local organizations in Ommen participating in the EVS project include a cheese farm, a horse farm and a pet shelter, a second hand shop and a youth camping. This short list of participating organizations, while far from complete, should go to show that there’s something to do for everyone, no matter what your interests are!

Not only will you be supporting Dutch organizations, you will gain a valuable experience living abroad, not just learning about the Dutch way of life, but gaining an insight in cultures from all over Europe.

Of course you won’t spend all your time working the farm or camping, you’ll have plenty of free time too. During this free time, you’re free to visit other cities, hang out with your friends, join the karaoke(!) evenings or anything else your heart desires.

Getting a place at Olde Vechte

For more information about the project, a more extensive list of local organizations participating in this project, food, pocket money and other important questions you can follow this link, or you can click this link for a video about the program. The application form can be found here and if you have any more questions, you can contact us here.

Since this project is a short-term EVS experience, meaning it lasts less than two months, you’ll be able to participate in a second EVS-project in the future to make full use of the 12 months you’re allowed to have.

Let us know if you’re interested, we can promise you that the Netherlands is an experience you’ll never forget!

With kindness,

Synergy Source Serbia

EVS Accreditation Status: Accomplished

bmodancing

Starting today, Synergy Source Serbia is an official EVS sending organization aiming to support young people from Serbia to live and volunteer abroad.

We are delighted to announce the recent notification that our NGO “Synergy Source Serbia” has been accredited as a Sending Organisation for the European Voluntary Service, a part of the Erasmus+ Programme.

After a few months of arranging papers, exchanging numerous e-mails and having meetings with our accreditors, we have reached the point where we can make an EVS project  happen for anyone who went through our informational meetings, as well as many others who have yet to discover the possibilities that the European Voluntary Service offers.

If you don’t know what is EVS, please check out “what is EVSsection of our website before you continue reading the article, so you know what’s up.

Getting accredited is an important milestone in the continuing growth and success of our organization, and it allows us to contribute to youth mobility and personal development as we determined in our aims, goals and mission.

What is going to happen next ?

Synergy Serbia is planning and organizing a series of events and activities that will lead to:

  • the ongoing promotion of EVS, so that more young people get informed and benefit from this program
  • continuous support and guidance through the whole volunteering process (application, placement, evaluation)  for the ones who are interested in doing EVS
  • a series of workshops focused on personal development and self-coaching, as well as increased cooperation with other local NGO’s (so give us a call, other NGO’s)

We are proud to have met the challenge of accreditation, and intend to introduce EVS to as many young people as possible, so feel free to contact us and find out more.

Sincerely,

Synergy Source Serbia

The Peace Club

Dear Synergy Source Serbia sidekicks,

We have received many words of encouragement and support with our mission from you over the last few months. Your trust and curiosity inspired us to organize something new, so this week we present you our “Peace Club”.

The “Peace Club” is a result of cooperation between Synergy Source Serbia and Peace Revolution (a foundation from Thailand) and it consists of free yoga & meditation sessions that take place once a week.

Throughout the sessions participants have the opportunity to get in contact with basic yoga and meditation exercises which, if developed as a habit, can lead to many beneficial results both on the body and the mind. Over time this inner peace practice enables the practitioners to, among others:

  • improve their mood and behavior
  • increase the level of emotional stability
  • cultivate resourcefulness and creativity
  • increase the feeling of joy and happiness
  • develop a stronger sense of intuition

With this intention we gathered this Wednesday (8th of April 2015) to perform the very first of the many Peace Club events to come. Judging from the feedback that came from our participants the first session was nothing less than a success.

That is why from now on every Wednesday night from 19:00 to 21:00 is reserved for cultivating inner peace or just looking very Zen for the sake of it.

The structure of the session is very simple:

– We’ll get together at 19:00

– We practice yoga, with our lovely yoga instructor-in-education Milena. This takes about 45 minutes.

– When everybody is stretched and comfortable, we take a short break

– After, we move on to meditation. A meditation instructor from the Thai Peace Revolution takes us on an inner peace journey. It consists of a 30 to 40-minute meditation session.

-We end the night by exchanging a few words and inviting you to join us the coming week

Those who are interested to join need to know 2 things:
-Where the address Matije Korvina 22A is and how to get there at 19:00 on Wednesdays

-That you will need to bring your own yoga mat

If you are interested to join us or support us in any way, don’t be shy and contact us. It is always nice to see the reaction as it always has a motivating effect.

Warm regards,

Synergy Source Serbia
